During the Second World War, the company was called “A. Stihl Maschinenfabrik” and was based in Bad Cannstatt. Bombings in 1943 and 1944 damaged the factory, so it was moved to Neustadt (now Waiblingen). In 1939, the company had about 250 workers. During the war, it also had several slave workers.
In 1945, Allied troops arrested Stihl, a member of the Nazi Party and the Allgemeine SS, and took over his company. After being locked up for three years, he was labeled a Mitlaufer and let go, with his company returned.
Since 1971, it has been the largest company in the world that makes chainsaws. Around the middle of the 1970s, Stihl grew by building factories in Brazil and the United States.
Most of the increase in demand came from the building and landscaping industries, but in Brazil, it was mostly from clearing forests. Stihl also made tools for home use, like blowers, line trimmers, edgers, and chainsaws, as well as for professionals.
In the 1970s, when they were still making chainsaws, Stihl got into the weed-trimmer/brush-cutter market. They worked with a Japanese company for a few years until they had their model to make themselves.
In 1992, Stihl bought an Austrian company called Viking and in 2008, Qingdao, China, became home to the newest Stihl factory. In December 2008, Stihl bought the company Zama, which made carburetors, to ensure a steady supply and get into a new business area with room for growth.
