One possible solution was to have two levels of Software engineering and one level of Senior Software Engineer. This approach can take time for recent grads to reach the top. Many are more likely than not to stay for years.
To retain new grads at Netflix, it would have made sense for them to create a “mid-level” job position. Most companies call this Software Engineer 2. This is the position that most engineers can realistically attain in around two years. They then move up to the Senior class in 2-3 years.
One of the challenges Netflix faced in its leveling was consistently recruiting top-senior talent.
Netflix is less interested in staff-and above engineers in Big Tech. However, it can still hire these people. They have hired engineers from Big Tech because they pay top-of-the-market compensation.
Many Staff+ engineers in Big Tech assume that Netflix doesn’t require or reward staff-and-above employees, despite not having a formal “Staff” level. Facebook is a different story.
