Is It Hard To Become A Disney Animator?

As my first job after college, I was lucky enough to get a job at Disney Animation. But, unfortunately, it doesn’t happen often, and I wasn’t an animator “full-fledged”–I was part of their apprentice & trainee program specifically for recent graduates.

Although it is difficult to get into Disney, it is possible if you work hard and make connections. It all depends on the job you are interested in within animation. For example, it is more challenging to get a job as a Disney character animator than a job as a technical manager. Although I am a lighting artist, animation, storyboarding, or concept art is more competitive.

Because of the training I received at school (Brigham Young University in Provo, UT), my connections at the studio (I had met the recruiter for my department at CTN before applying), and the fact that I knew how to maintain those connections (using LinkedIn to regularly chat with recruiters, emailing colleagues for advice and opinions, keeping my name alive with all the hiring managers, and understanding how the studio’s recruiting system works).

Additionally

I have applied to Disney before. While at school, I applied twice for the internship program. Both times I was denied. Unfortunately, my work was strong enough to surpass the first round of applicants. I was able, however, to exchange emails with the recruiters about the internship program. Although I did not get the internships they offered, they knew my name and had already seen that my work had improved. They also added some new material to my reel, which increased my chances of getting the job.

Many of my colleagues made it to Disney because they had the same experience as others at other studios. For example, many interns went to Sony as part of their iCAD internship program. Some had previously worked in small VFX shops around Los Angeles, while others were from gaming companies. Almost everyone who worked at Disney right out of college was doing so because they had completed the Apprenticeship program.

Despite this, you will need a strong portfolio and a demo reel to be selected for the Apprenticeship Program. Quality is Disney’s thing. Getting your first job at Disney or any other feature film studio can be challenging. However, it becomes much easier once you enter the industry, especially if you learn new skills and make connections.
