In Hanover, New Hampshire, there is a private Ivy League research university called Dartmouth College. Eleazar Wheelock, a Congregational pastor, and educator built it in 1769 with the intention of establishing a school for Native American children. The institution was situated in Lebanon, Connecticut, and was formerly known as Moor’s Charity School. Wheelock relocated the institution to Hanover in 1770, where it was given the new name, Dartmouth College, in recognition of William Legge, 2nd Earl of Dartmouth, a significant benefactor of the institution.

Dartmouth Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need and without the demand for repayment. Depending on how we determine your eligibility, the sums range from $1,000 to over $70,000.

Various Kinds of Dartmouth College Scholarships

DARTMOUTH ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

Many of the nearly 950 endowed scholarship endowments at Dartmouth will be matched with one or more of their students. These grants don’t signify new help; rather, they signal that existing aid will come from a particular endowed fund. There is an additional survey that all students getting aid to fill out to help with these pairings, but there is no separate application needed for any given opportunity. Any student may choose not to participate in this program if they so choose.

The majority of scholarship recipients are required to provide additional information on their time at Dartmouth and submit an annual letter of gratitude to their donors. Many even get the opportunity to meet their benefactors, which can result in some incredible networking possibilities. In order for our donors to understand the very real effects that their giving has on our financial aid program and our student body, they need to be able to relate to one or more specific Dartmouth students.

OUTSIDE SCHOLARSHIPS

If you have received outside scholarships (for example, based on academic, volunteer, or athletic accomplishment), this money will assist offset some of your own expenses.

You may utilize these monies to offset or replace the employment and student loan components of your award, as permitted by Dartmouth. Outside scholarships may also replace the amount of your grant containing leave-term earnings forecast as part of your student contribution. If there is still a discrepancy between Dartmouth’s EFC and the EFC determined by the FAFSA for students qualified for federal assistance, outside aid may also be used to bring Dartmouth’s EFC down to the federal level. Rarely, but on occasion, a student’s outside resources can be so significant that we must partially reduce their scholarship grant from Dartmouth in order to adhere to institutional and government awarding policies.

VETERAN’S BENEFITS

As a resource, veterans’ benefits are taken into consideration while determining a candidate’s eligibility for a Dartmouth scholarship. Currently, Dartmouth College contributes 100% to the Yellow Ribbon Program, which enhances GI Bill benefits.

FEDERAL GRANTS

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the sole form necessary to submit a request for federal financial aid if you are a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

Students who meet the requirements for Pell Grants are given them by the federal government based on their FAFSA’s determination of their financial need (FAFSA).

The College provides Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG) to the most deserving students. They range in size but never go over $4,000 annually.

STATE GRANT PROGRAMS

Undergraduate students in some states may apply for need-based grants that they can use at Dartmouth. State awards may be considered toward your overall grant eligibility but are not included until they are actually received from the state; at that point, they will essentially cancel out the Dartmouth scholarship. For the most updated details on the grant program in your state, get in touch with the financial aid office.
